Since you value the ones you love so much, of course you’d want to display your kids’ artwork, family vacation photos, souvenirs, and memorabilia. Who wouldn’t be proud of all these special memories! And houseguests love getting to see more about you and your lifestyle.

There’s nothing wrong with having a little extra love to give!

However, by loving so much and holding on to so many memories and “someday” items, this can get in the way of cherishing new ones. When we hold onto too many things, we aren’t leaving room – both physical and emotional – for the new possibilities.

Don’t worry, by no means am I suggesting throwing out all of your memorable and useful pieces! But by organizing them in an efficient manner, you will gain so much more freedom and not feel that heavy weight of clutter on your shoulders every day. Remember, any size step is still a step towards your goal – start small and work your way up!

Organizing Tips Tailored for The Sentimentalist

An easy way to start is by setting aside 30 minutes each week to reorganize one area. Having a vision (draw it if you need to!) for what you want your space to look and feel like will help you determine how much stuff you will have in each room. Make sure to leave some space empty and reserve it for the future.

Review your stashes and junk drawers periodically to gain clarity on why you are keeping certain things. Have a realistic plan for what to do with sentimental items; this may look like keeping them in labeled containers in storage for easy recall, taking photos of them to keep the memory but donating or discarding the actual things, or using organizational products to categorize and hide things from view.

Another tip to maintain these organizational systems is to use computerized planning and scheduling tools. These will serve you as both a reminder and help to hold you accountable. Change is difficult, especially when it comes close to our hearts. But by making it as easy as possibe for you to retrieve these items with efficient labels, storing them away is no long as worrisome!

For things you want to keep out and more accessible, consider using nice-looking baskets and bins so they’re still organized but not loose. These you can either store away in a closet or cupboard, or keep them on an open shelf. With this method your goal is to contain and create consistent boundaries for yourself in regards to sentimental items.

So what do you think, Sentimentalist? Does this way of organizing seem attainable for you?
